Hello Mommies and Daddies. I love to write in Mom’s Corner category on my blog. It dwells me into the fun filled moments of my son. In Pandemic, he started demanding for more time on TV and Mobile. Which was quite natural. On lifting lockdown, I took steps to engage him in other things.
It’s fine if child is watching TV for small amount of time. Watching TV is unavoidable due to many reasons. But it’s in our hand to minimize the technology intervention in their lives. It’s topic of discussion within parents to keep kids busy, as schools are shut and there are less family gatherings.
To Mommies and Daddies, weekdays are super exhausting. To Toddlers, weekdays and weekends make no difference in today’s time. This is increasing mobile addiction in kids and parents too.
To keep children away from TV and Mobile for longer time, let’s explore some ways of keeping them busy.
- Scenario based talks-
If you ask me what’s the most loved thing kids love is attention. They want somebody to hear them, to respond on their actions, to talk with them. Kids have tremendous energy to talk whole day.
Scenario based talks means you need to pick up reality based character, get into the character and involve kid in the act. I am sure kid will love it. This makes our life easy to give them basic lessons of living.
- Narrate a story from book-
Telling story is crucial to teach good habits and to excel their imagination power. We as caring parents always encourage children for developing reading habit. It needs little effort from our side too. Grab a pictorial book and narrate the stories. It builds interest for reading books. It also prepares them for further education.
- Give colours and brushes in their hand-
Children enjoy drawing with crayons and it creates grip into fingers. You can also try giving water colours and brushes. Kids love mixing colours and handling brushes. It should be done under somebody’s assistance. Painting is all time favourite activity than watching TV or Mobile. They will surely turn their back to screen and jump onto painting.
- Involve them in daily chores wherever possible-
From 2 yrs. old babies to elder ones, they are keen to handle things. Engage them in various activities. I wrote about it in detail in earlier post – Daily activities to deepen Mom & Child bond.
- Playing outside –
Post lockdown time, children are very much used to staying at home. It is causing anxiety, less appetite and more screen time. Take child to short walk. Let him/her take cycle out in ground , let child see his/her friends (by taking safety measures). Some parents are not allowing kids to play along with friends for safety reasons. But at least let them see each others from desirable distance. This will improve overall fitness too.
- Solitary time –
It’s necessary to give him/her solitary time. Solitary time makes them independent and nurture their creativity. Let them play alone with their toys and games. You will be amazed to see how clever your child is. 🙂
Playing alone makes them efficient to cope up with situations outside home. It gives them freedom to do whatever they want to do. Experts say that baby above 6 months can play alone.
Kids love to indulge in games like open Ended Toys, Jigsaw puzzles, Tricky games which need concentration. You don’t need to create toy library at home. Child will be curious to play same toys, contemplating the structures (if they are not shown for few days. Let toys have their turn iteratively). 🙂
Every day I thrive to be more creative while playing with my son. I look for various activities which can keep him busy and away from Mobile and TV as far as possible. Following models are my son’s creations. He did it patiently in one sitting. This made him believe in his abilities.
